These Sermeh Dozi appliques are highly versatile pieces of handcrafted art.
They can enhance luxurious clothing, serve as unique brooches or earrings, or bring new life to antique Termeh fabrics.
One of my clients in the United States even used them to beautifully decorate lampshades — a creative touch that shows their timeless charm.
Sermeh embroidery (Persian: سرمه دوزی), also known as Sormeh embroidery, is an ancient Persian art of decorative needlework dating back to the Achaemenid era, more than 2,500 years ago. It flourished during the Safavid dynasty, when it was used to adorn royal garments, curtains, and fine textiles.
Traditionally, this exquisite embroidery was crafted using gold and silver threads to create luxurious patterns on rich fabrics. Today, artisans use metallic or alloy threads that beautifully imitate the shine of precious metals. The embroidery thread is spring-like and flexible, giving the designs a raised and textured look.
Sermeh embroidery remains especially popular in Isfahan, Yazd, and Kashan, cities famous for their enduring artistic traditions.
